Putting skids on icy ecos

The entrance road to ecos is to be gritted in freezing weather conditions, a council committee has determined.

Members of Council’s Economic Growth & Development committee took the decision at their meeting last week in response to reports of cars skidding on a recent icy Saturday morning.

In his report on the issue, Assistant Chief Building Control Officer, Clive Kyle said that as the section of the roadway in question failed to meet Roads Service gritting criteria, Council’s Operational Services Department could grit it on Saturday mornings during icy conditions.

It was also proposed to construct a ramp on the roadway just before the turn-off road to the rear of the Showgrounds as a traffic calming measure. While members agreed a proposal by Cllr Declan O’Loan Council to carry out gritting, a consensus could not be reached in relation to ramp provision which when put to the vote was lost.
