Quad bike madness in front of school bus

POLICE have condemned the actions of teenagers on quad bikes who carried out 'doughnuts' whilst speeding in front of a bus carrying school children in the Corkey area.

Police have viewed footage taken from a camera on the bus and the investigating officer says the behaviour of those involved was “scary”.

Constable Ian Gourley of Ballymoney PSNI told the Times: “It happened around 4pm on February 4 as a bus taking schoolchildren home from Ballycastle travelled along the Corkey Road near Corkey.

“There were young people on two quads and a motorbike and they were doing hand-brake turns and spins - or ‘doughnutting’ - in front of the bus.

“They look as if they are school-age teenagers and they drove along in front of the bus and whenever it stopped at bus stops to let people off those involved performed doughnuts and would try to squeeze another one in before the bus would start off again.

“In one instance a quad can be seen going up on two wheels and if one of those involved had fallen off a quad as the bus was starting off they could have been killed or seriously injured.

“It appeared they were trying to show-off in front of the bus and this happened over a mile stretch from Ben Vista right up through Corkey.

“At one stage while all this is happening around the bus an articulated lorry is about to come out of Reservoir Road and a car is coming from the Tullykittagh Road direction. They were risking their lives and I would like the parents of these young people to see this footage which was scary. We would like to speak to those involved,” said Constable Gourley.

He said police have received no more reports of such activity although they have been patrolling the area when school buses are dropping children off home.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them on 08456008000.

A Translink spokesperson said: “We can confirm an incident occurred in Corkey involving an Ulsterbus on 4th February at approximately 4pm. We are assisting PSNI with their investigation.”
