The ‘Quare Gunk’ by local playwright Joyce Minford sees the world weary widow Elizabeth Hamilton played by Janette Stirling slaving away to look after her two middle aged sons, Willie and Hughie (John Christie and Peter Alexander), on their small farm holding in North Antrim.

When Mrs Hamilton passes away suddenly the two bachelor brothers attempt to look after themselves but Willie is concerned about the intentions of local widow (Cathy Knowles) and her two ‘weans’, Sammy (Adam McAuley) and daughter (Jessica Reid). With their culinary skills failing them abysmally Willie embarks upon an ambitious plan to find himself a suitable wife.

With candidates coming in the form of Miss Stewart (the minister’s sister) played by Rachael Frew, a motorbike riding cousin from Tyrone (Susan Christie) and Miss Maguire (Robyn McCormick), a sister of Willie’s financial advisor John Maguire (Mark McAuley), it is not long before he realises he is not as big a catch as he thought he’d be.

With Margaret Dunlop and John Gregg playing the roles of the local nurse and doctor, Willie’s ridiculous plan to select himself a wife soon backfires - leaving him to face a “Quare Gunk”.

The producers of this year’s Three Act Play are Mervyn Dickey, Kenneth Rock and Alison Caldwell.

The producers have a long tradition of drama through themselves being veterans of many Glarryford YFC plays. With the club celebrating its 70th anniversary the return of this very funny and popular play to the stage in Glarryford is particularly fitting, given that both Mervyn and Ken appeared in the original production performed by the club in 1990.
