Queen Street to get £150K ‘make-over’

QUEEN Street in Magherafelt is set to benefit from £150,000 in revitalisation funding.

The money. secured from the Department for Social Development (DSD), will be used to improve shop fronts and boost trade for small retialers within the area.

Magherafelt District Council will be overseeing the initiative which has been based on previous successful regeneration schemes in other towns and cities. Queen Street was highlighted in Magherafelt Town Centre Masterplan as an area that would benefit by improving its attractiveness to investors.

The £150K will now be used to improve the appearance and vitality of street through the provision of a Small Grants Scheme to business owners. The funding will be available to help develop a unique brand to promote the area as a place for shoppers and visitors and to improve the overall attractiveness of the area.

Speaking about the news, Magherafelt District Council Ian Milne said: “This was one of the projects highlighted in the Town Centre Masterplan published last year and we are delighted to have received this funding to help improve the appearance of Queen Street.”

“A steering group was established to develop the action plan for Queen Street Revitalisation Project and this group has worked closely with business and property owners on Queen Street to develop the application to DSD.”

“One of the first steps has been the production of a design Guide for Queen Street. The Design Guide has been prepared by McGurk Chartered Architects to provide guidance to property owners on the general approach that should be adopted when considering alterations and improvements to Queen Street.”

Councillor Milne continued: “The type of work that will be supported by the funding includes refurbishment and repairs to building frontages, painting, renewing shop signage and lighting. In addition floral features and street signage will be considered as part of the project.”
