Quigley selected for SDLP in East Londonderry

The Constituency Council of the SDLP has unanimously selected Councillor Stephanie Quigley to represent the party East Londonderry in the forthcoming Westminster election.

Stephanie’s introduction to politics was at an early stage as her father Gerry McLaughlin was an elected councillor for over two decades representing the SDLP on Coleraine Borough Council. She graduated from University and has worked within the Northern Health Trust as a state registered Podiatrist.

Stephanie was co-opted onto Coleraine Borough Council in 2013 replacing her father and won a seat in her own right on the new Causeway Coast and Glens Council the following year.

She quickly established herself as a hard working public representative appearing for constituents at tribunals and appeals. She has been a constant advocate dealing with among other matters housing issues, planning issues, health and education issues.

Among her initiatives is the unique Street Pastors Project which has been exceptionally successful in training and equipping a large number of volunteers from across 32 local churches to bring positive influence to those enjoying the local nightlife and has had a positive impact on local neighbourhoods.

Speaking after the selection meeting her election agent John Dallat said:

‘The issues are very clear in this election:

We want to maximise the support of voters who are extremely concerned about the impact of Brexit on our lives, our economy and the free movement of goods, people and services between Northern Ireland and the Republic as well as the rest of the European Union.

Stephanie has proven herself as a hard-working and conscientious councillor since being elected to the new Causeway Coast and Glens Council where she has given first-class representation to the electorate. She has represented those dependent on social housing and has been a strong voice for those in need of government services.

If elected she will focus on the need for job creation across a constituency where so many have been displaced both in the public and private sectors.

Stephanie knows the importance of tourism and will join the campaign to have the rate of VAT on hospitality reduced from 20 per cent to 9 per cent as is the case in the Republic. She will continue the SDLP campaign for better infrastructure both in roads and railways, internet and mobile communications.

Over the next few weeks Stephanie hopes to meet as many constituents as possible to get across her message that she really cares about people and especially those who find themselves in need of help and support.’
