Quinn puts up fight for boxing club refurbishment

GLENAVY Sinn Fein representative MaryKate Quinn has welcomed a visit from Lisburn councillors to see the ongoing positive sporting and community impact that the Townland ABC is having in the Crumlin and Glenavy areas.

“Townland Boxing Club is currently at the heart of sporting and community work in the greater Crumlin and Glenavy area,” said Ms Quinn. “Its hall is used on an ongoing basis throughout each week.

“Despite this tremendous amount of work, Townland boxing club has not received a single penny from Lisburn City Council.

“As a result I issued an invitation to the Lisburn councillors to see the ongoing impact of the club’s hard work on the local community, especially on the young people in the area.

“The number of young people using this club is constantly growing yet the facility is getting worse. Despite this the club is producing champions year after year at every age level. It is a commendable endeavour from all those involved in the club.

“We only have to look at the current focus on Irish boxing in the forthcoming Olympics to see the role models this sport can produce. Townland Boxing Club is part and parcel of this and funding must be forthcoming.

“On behalf of the club I would like to thank those councillors who took time out to visit the club, to see first hand the work that is happening and offer their support.”
