R Space Gallery celebrates third birthday

Lisburn’s R­Space Gallery celebrated its third birthday on Tuesday August 19 with a sparkling reception at the gallery on Castle Street.

Amongst the forty guests were Deirdre Robb, Visual Arts Officer from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Lisburn Councillor Johnny McCarthy and the newest member of the R­Space Gallery management board Alan Clarke.

Deirdre, Johnny and Alan joined gallery directors Robert Martin and Anthea McWilliams, administrator Rob Hilken and over 35 friends of the gallery including local artists, gallery volunteers and regular visitors in celebrating three years of contemporary visual arts and craft exhibitions.

Everyone enjoyed the scheduled August Craft Month exhibition ‘Double Flipside’ by jewellerysmiths Dr Sarah McAleer and Eddie J Doherty.

To date R­Space is proud to have exhibited 201 artists in 31 shows over three years, many from Lisburn and Northern Ireland but also from places as far away as Japan and Canada.

R­Space Gallery is delighted to have recently been awarded Lottery funding from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland for a third consecutive year, demonstrating their belief in the gallery’s vision of arts for all, engagement and participation, opportunities for local emerging talent and bringing international artists to the City of Lisburn.

R­Space Gallery has welcomed over 2,000 visitors to the gallery in the last year alone and is looking forward to welcoming many more in the years to come.

The next exhibition at R­Space ­ Lightness ­opens on Saturday September 13 and features five Northern Irish artists working with glass, photography, sculpture and interactive video.

The gallery is open Tues­day-Saturday from 11am until ­5pm during exhibitions and it also has a special programme of events scheduled for Culture Night Lisburn 2014 from 5pm on September 19 including artist talks, film screenings and music.

Everyone is welcome to come and join the celebrations.
