Race in memory of Stuart to fund heart research

The 20-mile sponsored bike race, which started off in Whitehead, raised over £2500 for Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke.

It is the second time the village has hosted the outdoor event, with an inaugural race last year generating over £19,000 for heart screening charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young).

25-year-old Stuart was playing his first match for Islandmagee FC in September 2013 when he collapsed.

He received medical attention at the scene, but sadly could not be revived.

The money raised will be used to fund research into heart defects, according to race organiser Noel McKee.

Following a 20-mile circuit around Islandmagee and Whitehead, the race began at the fire station on Chester Avenue on Sunday afternoon.

Noel said: “We had to get out at first light to grit the route as best we could and we lost a load of cyclists who had one look out of the window and decided to call it a day.”

A separate hill challenge took in the six most difficult climbs around the island.

This year also saw the introduction of a family cycle, walk, or run to the Rinkha, with 37 people taking part.

“Everyone had a great day out with hot soup and stew available for everyone on their return,” Noel said.

“Stuart’s family were very grateful to everyone for their ongoing support. This event provided a chance for different organisations within the town to work together for one very worthy cause.”

The event finished off on Sunday evening with  entertainment laid on at  Islandmagee Football  Club.
