RAFA award for Kilrea’s Georgina

A Kilrea woman has been presented with the biggest award to the Royal Air Forces Association. She is pictured here with Sir Dusty Miller KBC, President of the Royal Air Forces Association.

Georgina Shiels received the National Presidential Certificate in conjunction with the Queen’s Birthday Honours to mark her many outstanding years of service to the Association at the annual conference in Perth.

Georgina’s husband, Bertie, served in the Royal Air Force, and after some months accompanying him as a visitor to meetings, she decided in 1998 to join the Causeway Coast Branch.

Georgina is currently Welfare Officer for the Branch, a post she has held since 2006.

Her dedicated service with the RAFA included several years as Branch Secretary, she has also been much involved in a number of other capacities, including the annual Wings Appeal, which she helps to organise each September. Georgina and her husband also collect from schools in the area, raising much needed funds for welfare.

Each Christmas, Georgina organises the Christmas dinner for the branch senior citizens.

During the year she makes several visit to elderly veterans in their homes, nursing homes and hospitals.

In 2006, Mrs Shiels received a Regional Presidential Certificate in recognition of service to the Royal Air Force in Northern Ireland.

In 2011, she was awarded a Scotland and Northern Ireland Area Presidential Certificate for outstanding service to the Association.

Mrs Shiels is currently vice chairman of the Northern Ireland Regional Committee.
