Rail upgrade: Kee says it’s a pity rail announcement didn’t precede election

Ulster Unionist Foyle representative, Julia Kee, has welcomed news that the contracts have been awarded that will allow Phase 2 of the Coleraine to Londonderry Railway line to get underway.

She said: “News that work can get underway on Phase 2 of the Coleraine to Londonderry railway line will be welcomed not only in Londonderry, but also across the North West.

“Improvements to transport infrastructure can bring economic and tourism benefits to the City and I look forward to an increase in the frequency of train services, improving our connectivity to the rest of the country.

“With Londonderry’s economic black spot status, this is welcome news. We hear regularly about job creation from other parties, but this physical regeneration will add much needed infrastructure to the North West.

“It’s a pity Danny couldnt have pushed this decision pre-election! But the UUP are in the frame of mind that we do things for Northern Ireland, the people of Northern Ireland and not for party gain.

“Danny’s announcement will be welcomed not least by Lobby group Into the West, whom we hope are meeting Minister Kennedy in the not to distant future about the rail links and the Waterside Railway Station in particular.

“The date for this meeting is to be agreed shortly.”
