Rail upgrade: Middleton says public demands improvements

DUP MLA Gary Middleton says news that Phase 2 of the Londonderry to Coleraine rail upgrade is to be completed next year will be welcomed by the public, which demands it.

He said: “It is very welcome news that Phase 2 of the railway line upgrade is now to progress with the estimated completion to be in December 2016.

“The rail service in the North West is a vital component of our transport infrastructure. With rail passenger journeys continuing to grow year on year on the Londonderry line, it is clear that this project is in clear demand by members of the public.

“There is no doubt that this project will have a catalytic effect in terms of the local economy, tourism and future jobs and investment. The two largest cities in Northern Ireland will be better connected which will be welcomed by all who travel between them.

“The transport infrastructure in the North West in terms of the A5 and A6 projects are still vital and must also be progressed. I will continue to lobby the DRD Minister in relation to these projects.

“I look forward to seeing the completion of the second phase of the railway project.“
