Railway Bridge to be strengthened after series of collisions

WORK to strengthen a notorious railway bridge in Lisburn is to start next week.

Despite having a low headroom warning sign of 3.3 metres or 11 feet, the Antrim Street bridge has been struck by road users on a number of occasions.

Translink NIR say that well as improving overall safety for rail users the strengthening work, which will take until mid-April, will mean reduced delays to train services should the bridge be struck in the future.

The majority of the bridge strengthening work will be completed during normal working hours and will involve some road narrowing and lane closures to facilitate the activity.

However, for safety reasons some elements of the work will need to be carried out at night when there is no railway traffic. Translink says it will endeavour to keep any associated noise to a minimum.

Gerard McAtarsney, Southern Area Route Manager (Rail) said: “The damage caused by bridge strikes can have serious consequences and can cause significant delays to train services. We appeal to local residents, road and rail users for their ongoing support as we work to improve services for our passengers. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the bridge strengthening work.

“The safety of employees and customers is of the utmost importance to Translink.”
