Railway line and crossing will remain closed until police operation is completed

Train services remain suspended and the Antrim Road is closed while police continued to investigate a security alert in Lurgan.

Chief Inspector Paul Reid said this morning: “Police in Lurgan were made aware of suspicious activity around the Bells Row Railway crossing in the vicinity of Antrim Road in the town on Wednesday evening. It was further reported to police that a device had been left on the railway line.

“The railway line is currently closed and will remain closed until the policing operation is completed. Motorists in Lurgan are advised that the crossing at Bells Row will also remain closed for some time and they should avoid the Antrim Road and Cornakinnegar Road areas until further notice.

The Area Commander added: “I would appeal to any member of the public who notices any suspicious item or who may have any information about persons acting suspiciously in the area recently to report it to police immediately.”

Bus substitutions are in operation between Lurgan and Moira while the alert at the railway continues. Buses are also operating between Belfast and Newry for Enterprise passengers.
