The pensioners, all Protestants, were Elizabeth Craigmile, 76, Robert Scott, 72, Dinah Campbell, 72, Francis Campbell, 70, Nan Davis, 60, and Elizabeth Palmer, 60.

Outgoing Coleraine Mayor Sam Cole said up to 300 people attended a service at the war memorial in the town centre yesterday.

“It was very timely but very sad,” said the DUP councillor. “The event was long overdue because we need to recognise the victims of the Troubles.”

Unionist councillors, the PSNI and the British Legion all laid wreaths.

Mr Cole said some of the families yesterday asked for a memorial plaque to be erected on Railway Road where the bombing took place.
