Railway work welcomed

The work will involve the removal of old grey steel fencing and the installation of a more attractive green alternative.

Speaking about the planned activity, Translink NI Railways Southern Route Manager, Gerard McAtarsney, said:

“The new fencing will be higher to ensure that both safety levels are maintained and to deter fly-tipping, which has affected this area and local residents. After the fencing work is complete a clean-up of this railway bank will also take place.

“The planned activity will cover a distance of approximately 700 metres and has secured the support of local community representatives. We would ask for the continued support of local people as we work to enhance the area’s appearance and safety measures,” said Gerard.

Work is due to start in late May for a period of eight weeks. It is also the second phase of Translink improvement work that follows the upgrade of Bell’s Row Crossing last year.

SDLP Councillor Joe Nelson said: “We welcome this investment from Translink primarily as it will enhance the safety of the area by making access to the railway lines more difficult.

“This section of line has experienced a number of serious incidents in the past. The proposed fencing will improve the overall look of the area as it is more aesthetically pleasing than the existing fence. We also welcome the fact that the area will be cleared of litter during this operation.”

Community worker Michael Tallon said: “Local residents have been calling for this stretch of the railway line to be cleaned and the area secured to prevent the consistent fly-tipping which has marred the area.

“We welcome Translink’s clean-up initiative and their plans to replace the fencing with a stronger and higher fence.”

Councillor Noel McGeown said:

“This is good news and will be welcomed by the community. For by the obvious dangers this stretch of line has become an eyesore for local residents and for those using the train services.

“The small number of people who insist on dumping rubbish on the railway banks are presenting a wrong image of the area to train passengers. There is no excuse for fly-tipping and once this area has been cleaned up local residents should ensure that it remains clean by reporting anyone dumping rubbish in the area to the Council’s Environmental Services.”
