Rainey Rugby Club take the ‘Battle of the Bars’ crown

Despite a few tricky questions thrown in by quiz master Gerry Donnelly, the local pub teams scored well, displaying a vast depth of general knowledge throughout the charity evening.

By round three however, three teams - Rainey Rugby Club’s team B, Phil’s Bar, and O’Donovan Rossa - had surged to the top of the leader board.

By the halfway point Rainey were on top with 30 points, Phil’s Bar just a point behind and Downey’s A scoring well with 27 points.

The battle for first prize, heated up as the second half got underway.

Going into the final round just a single point separated the brain-boxes from Rainey and Phil’s Bar, but it was the rugby boys who prevailed winning the last round of questions claiming the title with a score of 66, to Phil’s Bar total of 65, with Downey’s third on 64.

The battle to avoid the bottom spot was also intense, however it was Dorman’s A team who collected the dreaded wooden spoon, much to their delight and amusement.

Local musician Pandy Walshe played a set of note-perfect tunes for the music round, while a film soundtrack was complied for the evening by Catherine Comber.

All proceeds raised from the Battle of the Bars were in aid of the Suicide AfterMath and Parish Funds.

Manager of the Parish Centre, Mona McGlade said the evening had proved to be a huge success.

She paid special mention to Gerry Donnelly, score keeper Joe McCrystal, Pandy Walshe and Catherine Comber for ensuring the event ran smoothly.

“As with many of the events here at the parish centre, it is the efforts of these people and of course the volunteers on the night, which makes these nights so special.”

“This is what the parish centre is all about - reaching out and creating a community spirit - and I am sure we can build on this success with many more events in the coming months,” she said.
