Raising money for solar lights in Zambia

The recent launch of Lurgan Lights was a Titanic-themed murder mystery led by Cregagh Players in Brownlow House. The event raise £903 which will buy 36 solar lights.

Soroptmist International, Lurgan is partnering Camfed for the project.

“Living without lights at night is dangerous and limiting,” said Dorothy Kasanda, Deputy Executive Director and Head of Education for Camfed Zambia.

“It is particularly a problem for schoolchildren. If they can’t study after dark, it hinders their academic progress.”

For girls living in rural Zambia, it is not uncommon to have to walk in excess of eight miles to school every day, and once they’ve walked the eight miles home again the light is starting to go. Having access to light will provide many benefits to the girls of rural Zambia, not least allowing them to study and gain an education.

Jillian Patchett, President of Soroptimist International of Lurgan, said: “It is wonderful to think that 36 girls in Zambia will now be able to study at night from the proceeds from a very enjoyable night. I’d like to thank all those who attended, donated prizes and donated to the raffle. The generosity will make a real difference to lives of these 36 girls.”
