Rally champion injured in Sligo

Maghera rally driver, Eugene Donnelly, has been released from hospital following a horrific crash at the Sligo Stages Rally at the weekend.

The five times Irish Tarmac champion - was not driving in the event but had swapped seats with his navigator Paul Kiely.

The crash occurred during stage one of the event when the men’s Mitsubishi Lancer went off course and hit a tree.

Both were rushed to Sligo General Hospital where they received treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

He was released after being treated for a broken collarbone, cracked rib and also internal bleeding.

Paul remains in hospital for further treatment on his injuries.

A post on the Donnelly Motorsport Facebook page said: “Paul remains in hospital for further treatment on his injuries. He is in a comfortable condition and on very strong medication. Our thoughts and prayers stay with him.”
