Rasharkin is riding on the crest of a wave!

On Saturday 26 May, 23 members of the Rasharkin Community Youth Project (along with a support crew of five adults) headed off to Portrush for the launch of their youth forum.

In the morning, facilitated by representatives from Northern Ireland Youth Forum and by their project manager, the group of young people took the opportunity to learn more about what a youth forum is and how it works.

They also had an opportunity to make decisions about the kind of activities they would like to be involved in over the coming year.

Once the business of the morning was complete, and having enjoyed a beautiful lunch in the sunshine at the Arcadia, the group moved on to the business of serious fun! Well looked after by Troggs Surf School, the Rasharkin delegation spent the afternoon learning how to surf.

“It was great to see all the young people in the water enjoying themselves,” said Jane, the manager of the project. “We are now all looking forward to a really exciting menu of activities over the summer months!”

It would be fair to say that those young folk of Rasharkin are a pretty adventurous bunch. Not only are they intrepid surfers, they are also gearing themselves up for a spot of coasteering in July and some zorbing in August. “Combining youth forum business with team-building activities such as these really works,” said Mary Gilmore, one of the members of the project steering group.

She continued: “Our approach is : get stuff done while having fun!”

If you are a young person from the Rasharkin area aged between 11 and 16, there are still a few places available on the project (which is all about providing genuine opportunities for young people from all sides of the community to get to know each other, try out new things, share inspiring experiences and grow as members of the community.)
