Rates hike is 'the last straw'

THE newly elected President of the Roe Valley Chamber of Trade and Commerce says the recent rates increase announcement could be "the final straw" for businesses in the area.

Chamber President Julie Brolly stated: "This 7.5% increase will adversely affect businesses in all sectors throughout the borough, and we hope that this isn't the final straw for businesses that are finding it difficult."

"Immediate investment in the local economy is vital, and with no foreign direct investment anticipated for the Roe Valley area it is up to Limavady Council to show leadership to help local businesses to survive, and when possible to grow."

"We have a number of challenges to face up to. Certain sectors including tourism will grow and businesses in these sectors need support to make the most of any opportunities. Other sectors will continue to struggle, and these sectors need help get through these tough times, and a rates increase is the last thing these businesses need."

Ms Brolly added: "We do broadly welcome Councils much needed investment in key infrastructure such as the Town Hall and in the Magilligan Greencastle ferry, and we believe that with the imminent amalgamation of Limavady Council with Coleraine, Ballymoney and Moyle future investments by Limavady Council are necessary."

"We would like to see efforts made to ensure that local jobs and businesses are secured for the construction and supply of the new Civic Centre, and similarly with the Dungiven bypass and other construction projects in Roe Valley."

"We work very closely with Limavady Council's economic development team and we're encouraged by their recent efforts and commitment to develop the local economy, and we believe that a number of excellent economic development initiatives are in the pipeline."

Julie concluded: "Roe Valley Chamber of Trade and Commerce are doing what we can to help develop the local economy, and we will be launching our exciting and very ambitious Action Plan in the next few weeks."

"We are hoping that over the coming months and years Roe Valley Chamber of Trade and Commerce can help businesses to recover from the recent downturn, and grow to their full potential, helping develop the Roe Valley economy."
