Rates rise by 3pc

THE Larne district rate will increase by three per cent in 2011-12.

The rise recommended by Larne Borough Council’s rates committee was struck behind closed doors at the local authority’s latest monthly meeting.

The Larne Times understands that six councillors voted in favour, with four against, in a recorded vote.

Earlier, while the council was still in open session, Cllr Winston Fulton said the DUP regarded the increase as an additional burden on businesses and householders in the recession, but in a statement issued by the council on Tuesday, rates committee chairman Ald Roy Beggs (UUP) argued that the council had kept the rise to a minimum.
