Rates set to rise this week

COUNCILLORS and Senior Management at Coleraine Borough Council met this week to continue discussions on how to minimise any increase to this year's rates.

Speaking after a special rates workshop, the Mayor, Councillor Sandy Gilkinson said that members and officers were working hard to ensure that any rates increase is kept to an absolute minimum.

"In the current economic conditions there is a need to ensure that Council operates as efficiently and effectively as possible, but also continues to provide accessible services for the benefit of everyone in the Council area. A key action has been a review of all activities to ensure that they are both affordable and align with the needs of our ratepayers," he said.

Town Clerk and Chief Executive, Roger Wilson added: "External pressures such as the downturn in the economy and the reduction of central government funding have had a significant impact on Council finances. It has been necessary to make some hard decisions but despite these challenges, we strive to deliver high quality services across the Borough to improve the area".

The annual process for striking the local rate will conclude before February 15.
