'Rathcoole sculptures represent positive change'

NORTH Belfast MP Nigel Dodds has welcomed the unveiling of five new sculptures at the entrances to the Rathcoole estate.

The DUP man was among a number of community and political representatives who joined local residents and school pupils at The Diamond on Friday (March 19) for a special ceremony during which the main sculpture was officially unveiled by Newtownabbey Mayor John Scott.

The stainless steel artworks - designed by Gary Armstrong, Head of Art at Newtownabbey Community High School, and some of his pupils - are said to represent the area's strong family bond and community spirit.

The project, which has been ongoing since 2006, has been led by Rathcoole Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership, with support from the Department for Social Development and Newtownabbey Borough Council.

Speaking after Friday's unveiling ceremony, Mr Dodds commented: "This is a project which has been many years in the planning and I welcome that it has now come to fruition.

"I was delighted to join with residents, local councillors and representatives of various agencies for the official unveiling of the statue at The Diamond.

"There was a cheerful and upbeat tone to the event. I was particularly pleased to see the large number of school pupils attending who have contributed to the design work led by teacher Gary Armstrong."

He added: "These statues - chosen to symbolise Honour, Excellence, Strength, Honesty and Family - are a public manifestation of the positive change happening in Rathcoole. I am confident that the commitment of local people, elected representatives, statutory agencies and Rathcoole Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership, will ensure that the plans for regeneration and renewal will continue to progress."

The five stainless steel sculptures are both eye-catching and unique.

The main sculpture was unveiled in the heart of Rathcoole, by the Mayor and the remaining four sculptures are at the various entrances to the estate.

Alderman Scott praised the Rathcoole Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership for developing the project and thanked the inspiring young people from Newtownabbey Community High School for their thought provoking designs.

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie and Housing Executive District Manager Sharon Crooks both commended the commitment of all those involved in the ongoing work to improve the Rathcoole area.
