Rathfriland girl wins milk competition

A RATHFRILAND school girl is the lucky Northern Ireland winner of a national Healthier Milk poster competition organised by high street retailer Marks & Spencer.

Chosen from over 200 entries received from schoolchildren across the UK, 13-year-old Kate Gallagher from Ballyward designed her ‘M&S Moo-licious Milk’ poster to promote a new range of M&S milk - Better for You - that is lower in saturated fat.

M&S is the first UK retailer to introduce healthier milk which offers customers naturally lower fat milk and will, in just one year, see up to 84 tonnes of saturated fat removed from its customers’ diets, while also improving the health and welfare of its dairy cows.

Better For You milk is now for sale in M&S stores and is the result of an extensive trial involving a team of experts at Reading University, select M&S farmers and consumer research.

Working closely with dairy farmers, M&S researched ways of feeding cows with natural grasses and cereals to produce milk which was naturally lower in saturated fat. By altering the cows’ diets using only wholesome ingredients such as grass, maize, silage, rapeseed and linseed, saturated fat levels were reduced.

As part of her prize package, Kate and her family spent a day at Roy Irwin’s 300-acre dairy farm outside Dervock in Ballymoney where she had the opportunity to see how M&S milk is produced.
