Rats are ‘major problem’ in town

MORE needs to be done to combat the increasing number of rats in Carrickfergus, local representatives have claimed.

A number of Carrick Councillors expressed their concerns over how the local authority handles pest control at Monday night’s meeting of the Environmental Services Committee.

“I have been contacted by residents of McKeen’s Green and the area around Woodsides and they have told me that they are spotting rats very often,” said Alderman May Beattie. “I understand the Council has baited the area, but as quite a few residents in McKeen’s are elderly, it would be best if someone from Council could visit them or get in touch to let them know how it’s being dealt with.”

Meanwhile, Cllr David Hilditch suggested the Marine Gardens scheme has also displaced a large number of rats into the surrounding area, while rubbish from food outlets was encouraging the animals towards the harbour and castle.

“This is not something we want visitors to our town to see; it’s a major problem and one we need to take seriously,” added Cllr Charlie Johnston.

Director of Environmental Services, Alan Barkley indicated he would examine the budget to determine how the pest control service might be enhanced.
