Within the space of an hour 35 people commented on the issue on our Facebook page - a reaction not seen since the recent flag protests and rioting.

Ashley Maguire said on Facebook: “I think it’s great and about time too!! I always use my own bags so it doesn’t make any difference to me but hopefully [it makes] a big difference to the environment.”

While others thought it was just another tax designed to increase the government’s coffers.

However, some were able to see the funny side. Shay Carroll joked: “I’m selling Tesco bags, only used once, 10 for 20p.”

On Twitter RJ McLean tweeted: “I’m much better at balancing groceries now.”
