Traders reacted with dismay when they were told a 'mistake' had been made in either the construction or the plans.

A meeting of traders was told the pavement outside Gordon’s Chemist at the bus stops extended too far out into the road.

Chamber of Trade chairman Charlie Gardiner told traders at a meeting in the library on Monday night: "We were given a guarantee that the two lanes of traffic would remain.

"But that section of the pavement has been completed and half the lane has gone.

"The bus stops are supposed to be set in with the two lanes of traffic remaining.

"After speaking to the contractor they have said the issue was a problem with the plans and the kerbs are to be lifted and moved back."

He said the bus bays should not have been in the road, adding: "SIAC are just working to the plans.

"The project leader for SIAC is very well organised, he knows every crack in the pavement.

"The mistake may have been made during the planning stage when the consultants changed."

The announcement was met with derision from the room and one trader said it was a 'joke' and someone needed to be held accountable.

However, speaking to the 'MAIL', James Carmody project manager for the realm works said no changes were to be made.

He said: "The kerb will remain where it is, we are working to plans set out and approved by the Roads Service."

At Monday night's meeting traders also vowed to have a meeting with the contractor on improving communication links.

This call came after many traders and people using the town were taken by surprise when Black's Court was closed-off.

Mr Gardiner said: "The contractor is contacting the businesses directly affected by the disruption, but it can affect the wider community."

Following the meeting on Monday night Mr Gardiner said SIAC had vowed to open Black's Court today (Thursday) and make it a priority for pedestrian access.
