Recession Busters: The Challenge of Unemployment

A LONDONDERRY woman will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Recession Busters, which will take place in Lisnaskea High School, Fermanagh, on Monday, March 28, at 7.30pm.

The title of the talk will be ‘The Challenge of Unemployment’. The challenge of unemployment is one that is being faced by more people across Northern Ireland. In figures released for February this year the number of people claiming unemployment benefit in Northern Ireland rose to 59,100, a rise of 300 on the previous month. The figures are up 3,500 or 6.3 per cent on this time last year.

Rev Earl Storey, one of the organizers behind the Recession Busters series, said: “Figures and statistics only tell us part of the story. Unemployment is something that is being felt in every part of our community. The impact of it is always very personal.

“Recession Busters was organized because of the economic challenges facing us. As organizers we believe in the future not only for our community but also for the individual. Unemployment is affecting every part of our community. We believe it is a challenge that can be met and overcome.”

Margaret Lee will talk from her wide experience about the practical challenges of unemployment and how they can be overcome. The Cresco Trust works in many different parts of Northern Ireland and has particular experience in the area of unemployment. Their vision is that employment offers real chances for disadvantaged individuals to take charge of their lives and make more positive life choices. That is why they run a series of programmes that address the challenges of unemployment.

A popular part of the Recession Buster evenings is the presence of a wide range of local community organizations and advisers who can provide practical advice.

Everyone in the community is warmly welcome. Each event begins at 7.30pm and admission is free. Free refreshments are available during the evening.
