Shocking pictures of two young men standing on top of the new bridge at Toome has prompted a local MLA to call for preventative measures to be put in place before there is tragedy.

The pair were snapped by Ballymaguigan cyclist Damien Doyle who was out for a ride on Sunday morning.

Sinn Fein MLA Ian Milne told the Mail today that such “dare devil” behaviour could have resulted in a fatality.

“There could have been serious consquences if someone had slipped and fallen,” he said, stressing that there should be barriers at the bridge to prevent people getting onto the bridge.

“I would urge young people thinking of copying these people to desist.”

SDLP MLA Patsy McGlone described it as reckless and dangerous.

He said such behaviour usually had one outcome - either a long stay in hospital or in a fatality.

Mr Doyle admitted he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

“As I got closer I realised that it was exactly what I thought it was. Two fellas standing each on one side of the curved bridge,” he said.

“I watched and one of them stood up, lifted his camera and took a photo of the other, and then the other lad did the same.”

He said his concern was that it could spark some kind of craze and others would copy them.
