Recognise any of these Bonny Babies from 1985? when a Sentinel stalwart passed on

Do you recognise any of the Bonny Babies who featured in a competition in the paper all of 30 years ago?

You know who you are!

On a sadder note thirty years ago also marked the passing of a major figure who helped define an era of local journalism in Londonderry. On Friday, December 6, 1985, former editor, Sidney DM Buchanan passed away at the age of 63. He began his distinguished career with the paper as a Junior Reporter in 1938. It was to become a lifetime of devotion. He swiftly rose to the position of Senior Reporter and eventually deputised during the illness of his predecessor, CD Milligan. A Londonderry man born and bred who loved his native city, his journalistic flair, agile mind and profound knowledge of the city made him the obvious successor when Mr Milligan retired in 1956. He remained as editor of the Sentinel until his retirement in 1983, and in those 27 years, trained and won the respect of many reporters who have gone on to higher positions in journalism throughout the British Isles. Even after his retirement Mr Buchanan was a contributor with in ‘My Londonderry Diary’ as David Maxwell.
