It has also been a priority for the Safeguarding Board since it was set up last year.

That is why there has been so much concern at the recent reports of Child Sexual Exploitation across Northern Ireland.

Safeguarding Board Director, Sharon Beattie says: “Reports of the young people affected by Child Sexual Exploitation - a horrendous form of child abuse - have raised awareness of the dangers facing under 18’s who might often go missing from home.

“Child Sexual Exploitation is child abuse and can affect any child, boy or girl, anytime, anywhere regardless of their background.

“A 24 hour HELPLINE on 0800 389 1701 is available for anyone concerned about Child Sexual Exploitation and there are information leaflets on the Safeguarding Board website at www.safeguardingni.org/childsexualexploitation ”

So as parents and carers what should we be looking for? What is Child Sexual Exploitation?

It can take many forms, whether it occurs through a seemingly ‘consensual’ relationship with an older boyfriend, or a young person having sex in return for attention, gifts, alcohol or cigarettes. What it means is offenders grooming youngsters and using their power to sexually abuse them.

Many young people who are being abused do not realise they are at risk and will not call for help. They may see themselves as willing participants when in fact their behaviour is anything but consenting. But remember, Child Sexual Exploitation is child abuse and, although they may not realise it, it puts the young victim at huge risk of damage to their physical, emotional and psychological health.

Sharon Beattie adds: “While there is no typical victim of sexual exploitation, there are warning signs in children’s behaviour that may indicate something is wrong – and if you know what you’re looking for, you can take steps to help them.

“The Safeguarding Board is working with its member agencies to create awareness of this serious risk to our young people and to help parents and carers get advice if they need it. Remember Child Sexual Exploitation is child abuse – the young people are the victims.”

The Child Sexual Exploitation 24 hour HELPLINE is available on 0800 389 1701. A range of leaflets is also available on the Safeguarding Board website www.safeguardingni.org/childsexualexploitation
