Recognition for Larne volunteers

Over 80 volunteers from a wide variety of groups came together to recognise their community endeavours, as well as the time and commitment they have given to making their communities more welcoming. The event was organised by LEDCOM as part of the Areas at Risk pilot programme, funded by the Department for Social Development.

Patricia Brennan, programme manager at LEDCOM said: “This is an important event as it not only seeks to recognise, but encourage, promote and reward in a small way the volunteers in Craigyhill and Antiville who have worked tirelessly to improve and develop their community.

“They are the backbone of the community and without whom many of the achievements and milestones reached over the last two years would not have been possible. It is therefore timely that this event takes place to mark not only the contribution of volunteers, but to celebrate the programme’s success. Our thanks goes to the funders, the Department for Social Development through their Areas at Risk pilot programme and the Community Foundation For Northern Ireland’s Communities in Transition Programme.”

Anne Currie from DSD commended LEDCOM for organising the initiative and said: “Volunteering makes Northern Ireland a better place for us all to live.

“It helps people connect with each other in new ways and to work with others in our community positively, for the benefit of all. The volunteers in Craigyhill and Antiville have really made a difference and I wish them continued success in their community endeavours.”

Larne Mayor Councillor Bobby McKee, who also attended the event, added: “This is a great evening and wonderful way to recognise the role, value and importance of volunteers in our community and all credit should go to LEDCOM for organising such a terrific event. The changes in Craigyhill and Antiville over the last two years in particular are plain to see and
