Recycle old TV sets after the digital switch

DIGITAL TV switchover in Northern Ireland started on October 10. The analogue signal is switched off on October 24 and after this time old analogue TVs will need a digital box to receive the new signal. Many residents may take the opportunity to buy a new TV, leaving them with the problem of getting rid of the old one.

Lisburn City Council can assist householders by offering an electrical appliance recycling service at the Council’s two recycling centres, or by arranging for a free bulky waste collection from residents homes.

Councillor Andrew Ewing, Chairman of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee said: “We appreciate there may be numerous unwanted television sets as a result of the switchover and we are keen to assist householders recycle these. We can accept TVs at our recycling centres at The Cutts and Drumlough, or we can arrange a free collection if the householder contacts our bulky waste collection service.

“Residents need to be aware that electrical goods should never be placed in any bin as these items are not accepted in landfill sites or other waste handling facilities. Instead all electrical equipment from toasters and hairdryers to TVs and washing machines should be recycled at your local civic amenity site.”
