Recycle small electrical items in your blue bin

Items including kettles, toasters, electric toothbrushes, hairdryers, curling tongs, shavers and even old power tools, basically anything with a plug, batteries or items that require charging, can be recycled in your blue bin.

The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Michelle Knight-McQuillan explains, “Three out of every four of us have at least one old or unused electrical item at home which could be recycled to help save precious resources.

“Many of these items contain important plastics and metals that can be recycled to make new products. One old toaster can provide enough steel to make 25 new cans!

“I would ask everyone to work towards wasting less by recycling their old electrical items this summer. Many of us do recycle everyday items such as newspapers, cans and plastic bottles which is fantastic, but each of us could do a little bit more to aid our environment.

Fiona Watters, Waste and Recycling Officer at Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council added, “Each person, it is estimated, accumulates three new electrical items each year. That amounts to over four hundred thousand items in the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council area alone!

“I appeal to anyone with unused electrical items to ensure they dispose of them responsibility by recycling them in their blue recycling bin. Larger electrical items such as vacuum cleaners, video players, Hi-fi’s, printers, lawnmowers, strimmers, cookers and those containing glass such as televisions, microwaves, food mixers, laptops and computer monitors, can also be recycled at your nearest Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Recycling site.”

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s recycling sites are located in Ballycastle, Ballymoney, Castlerock, Coleraine, Dungiven, Garvagh, Kilrea, Limavady, Portstewart and Portrush.
