A new waste recycling facility recently opened in the Strahans Road area of Strabane has won the Excellence in Waste Management award at the prestigious Sustainable Ireland Awards this week.

Conor Canning, Head of Environment at Derry City and Strabane District Council, who attended the awards ceremony said the award was a great boost to the team involved in the newly constructed facility at Srahans Road.

“This new purpose built waste facility was opened in December 2014 replacing a former amenity site at Carricklee and a waste transfer Station in Newtownstewart.

“The recycling/transfer facility provides increased capacity for more segregation and recycling of additional materials, and is greater convenience for the public in terms of depositing waste, as well as playing an important role in meeting the statutory European Union targets in terms of waste management obligations.”

“We are delighted to have secured this prestigious award that recognises our commitment to achieving excellence in waste management services, “ he added.
