Recycling plan for businesses

PLANS to introduce a recycling collection for businesses could save money for traders in the town.

That's according to the council's head of technical services, Trevor Graham, who has asked for traders opinions on recycling.

Lurgan businesses were asked for feedback on the a proposal to introduce a recycling collection service.

If introduced the council would collect green bins filled with paper, cardboard, tin cans and plastic bottles every two weeks.

Ordinary blue bin collection would remain weekly or move to the alternate collection depending on need.

Traders already pay for the collection of ordinary waste. At Monday night's information meeting for business owners in the Jethro Centre many traders asked if the new collection would increase their waste bills.

Head of technical services for the council, Trevor Graham said: "This will hopefully reduce the cost of waste collection.

"Currently waste in the blue bins goes straight to landfill and can cost around 100 per tonne.

"If we start collecting recycling it can reduce the overall amount in the blue bins and reduce collection rates for businesses.

"The letter that was sent out to the businesses this week has asked for feedback.

"Nothing has ben decided as yet. When we receive replies we will then consider our options before presenting a report to council."

The deadline for replies is Monday, January 25.
