Reduced gravity leads to lighter feeling

If you’re feeling a little lighter on your feet this morning, there’s a very good reason for it with a 20 per cent decrease in the Earth’s gravity.

According to the Astronomical Foundation (AF) the rare phenomenon is caused by an almost unique planetary alignment - even more rare than the recent solar eclipse.

With Venus, Mercury, the Sun and Jupiter lining up on one side of the Earth it is causing a significant disruption in the Earth’s Gravitic Filed.

AF spokesperson Ita Wyndup the alignment only happens once every thousand years: “The celestial dance is a wonderful thing and with these planets now all lined up on one side of the Earth the gravity effects are being keenly felt.

“Tides today will be much higher than normal and water levels generally will have risen.”

She also urged taller people to watch their step going through doorways, with the reduced gravity they will be going a little higher as they take a step and there is a risk of them hitting their heads on door frames.

She also advised against skipping in rooms with low ceilings - again there is the real risk of a nasty collision.

The effect is expected to pass around midday today.
