Reduction in recorded crime in Moyle but ASB is up

RECORDED crime in the Moyle area has fallen, figures produced at a Council meeting in Ballycastle show, writes Nevin Farrell.

The statistics were provided by Bridgeen Butler, manager of the Moyle Policing & Community Safety Partnership and show that in the 2012-13 recording period there were 3,441 crimes in Moyle, compared to 3,678 the previous year.

The breakdown for 2012-13 was: Ballycastle area - 2,201; Bushmills area - 703 and Cushendall area - 537.

Of the overall figures it showed that reported anti-social behaviour (ASB) incidents had risen slightly from 438 incidents for the whole of Moyle in 2011/12 to 442 for 2012/13.

Of those there were 345 anti-social behaviour reports in Ballycastle; 53 in Bushmills and 44 in Cushendall.

Meanwhile, Cllr Joan Baird hopes that funding can be found to ensure that Community Safety Wardens can be kept in place.

Several councillors spoke of the good work being carried out by the Partnership, including Council Chairperson Cara McShane and Cllr Randal McDonnell.
