'˜Reinstate Londonderry to London air route' says MP

Londonderry DUP representatives have called for the reinstatement of the Ryanair London route at the City Airport.

It follows confirmation this week the low-cost airline will axe flights from the Eglinton site to London in March 2017.

East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell said: “For many years it has been the case that a local airport which most people in the North West support, must diversify. It is absolutely critical now that a London route is re-instated and airlines apart from Ryanair are secured for other routes.

“Londonderry’s airport has probably only got two years to prove it is viable as failure to attract the other routes will mean the ratepayer subvention increasing dramatically and local support will evaporate as the costly alternative could not be sustained.”

Ryanair also announced it will no longer fly from Londonderry to Faro from next April and will also reduce its services to Liverpool from five to two per week.

Foyle MLA Gary Middleton commented: “This news will be a real blow to the local economy of Londonderry. To have an airport in the city is important for local businesses, creates better connectivity and choice for those travelling.

“I would hope a solution can be reached on this issue. This will be vital to secure the airport’s future here.”

The airport said on Tuesday it was hoping there would be no job losses and is seeking government help with an alternative provider on the London route, which could be in place by Spring of next year.
