Remember your pets at Halloween!

THE Halloween season is sure to provide an abundance of family fun and entertainment, but it's important to remember that fireworks often mean misery for our dogs.

In recent weeks, Coleraine Borough Council Dog Warden’s have visited local Primary Schools to educate pupils on the importance of caring for their dogs during this time of year.

The Dog Wardens attended Milburn, Milstrand, Gorran, Ballysally, Garvagh, Carhill, Cullycapple, Macosquin and Irish Society Primary Schools over a two week period to engage with the pupils through interactive a fun ways of learning in order to deliver the dog safety message.

Dogs have acute hearing and loud bangs may cause severe pain in their ears, this can lead to distress and in extreme cases, cause phobias.

At this time of year it is important to adhere to the following advice:

* Keep your pet calm and indoors,

* Close doors and windows,

* Increase their bedding space to provide maximum comfort,

* Do not leave dogs alone during firework displays and, under no circumstance should you take your dog to a fireworks displays.

Nuala Houston, Dog Warden at Coleraine Borough Council added: “Dogs are extremely sensitive to noise and the majority of them become distressed due to fireworks.

“I was delighted to be given the opportunity to chat with local primary school children, discussing the impact the Halloween festivities can have on our household pets.

“I received a warm and enthusiastic welcome from students who were very responsive to our safety message and seemed to greatly enjoy our interactive session together.

“I encourage dog owners in the Borough of Coleraine to implement simple changes around their home during the Halloween period, to ensure the health and wellbeing of their household pets.”
