‘Remembering our brave Aaron’

Ranger McCormick (22) had been helping to clear an area of improvised explosive devices during a patrol when he was killed in an explosion.

The former Coleraine Inst pupil was on his second tour of duty serving with the 1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment.

Last Saturday, the McCormick family were joined by the Mayor of Coleraine, councillor David Harding and MLAs Gregory Campbell and George Robinson for the dedication service at the church just minutes from where Aaron grew up.

The McCormick family also handed over a cheque to Belfast war hero Andy Allen, who has set up a charity to help war veterans here in Northern Ireland.

Speaking to The Times after the dedication service, a tearful Maggie said she was delighted with the turn out.

“The idea behind the bench is that Aaron’s friends and family now have somewhere to sit and reflect when they come to visit him.

“Many of Aaron’s friends come to chat with him, and we felt that the bench would be a nice idea.

“The seat has a great view across the grave yard.”
