Remembering the Somme on July 1

THE Ballymena branch The Royal British Legion, in conjunction with Ballymena Borough Council, will commemorate the 96th Anniversary of The Battle of The Somme on Sunday, July 1.

On that date, Legionnaires, Naval, Army and Royal Air Forces Associations should assemble at The Services Club Ballymena at 6.30pm.

The parade, led by Castlegore Band, will step off at 7pm and March to the Memorial Gardens via Trostan Avenue, Castle St, Bridge St, Waveney Road, Galgorm Road.

On arrival at the Memorial Gardens a Service of Remembrance will commence at approximately 7.20pm when the Service will be led by Rev Maureen Hassard of Ballymena Methodist Church.

Following the short Service, wreaths will be placed on the War Memorial and the Parade will then reform and march back to the Services Club

The return route will be Galgorm Road, Lower Mill St, Wellington St. - where the Mayor will take the Salute outside the Post Office, then Church St, Castle St and Trostan Ave.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the dedication of the Thiepval Memorial and an exhibition and accompanying commemorative booklet have been created to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the 1932 dedication of the Memorial to the Missing by Sir Edwyn Lutyens.

The exhibition is in the Thiepval Visitor Centre, 8 rue de l’Ancre 80300 Thiepval France, next to the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.
