Remembrance service at Mill Strand

The service, led by Mr Cleland’s Year seven class, saw pupils from every year group lay wreaths of remembrance in an poignant service to remember the human sacrifice of conflict and pray for peace.

The names of those lost in the First World War from Portrush, nearly a third of those who served, were read out as well as family members and relatives who pupils wanted to remember including: Beth Goode who remembered her Great Great Grandfather Major General Sitwell, Commanding Officer of British Troops on Java Island in WW2, Matilda Krolak who’s Great Grandfather Karzimierz was a Polish volunteer and now has a street named after him and Mason Pickering who remembered his uncle Johnny Pickering who served with the Desert Rats and Special Forces.

Pupils from Mill Strand Integrated School were also deeply touched by two names on the Portrush Cenotaph, those of Jacob Diamond and Jacob Diamond Jr.
