But the inclement weather had no impact on the desire by the thousands who turned out to pay their respects to the dead of two world wars and other more recent conflict.

The traditional 30-minute service at the city’s War memorial in The Diamond, organised by the Royal British Legion, was led by the Dean of Derry, Very Rev William Morton DL, at the invitation of the RBL.

The morning began with a short service in the lower hall at the RBL Iona Terrace, at 9.10am and the parade formed up and moved off from the RBL Waterside. Among participants were the Naval Association, RAF Association, the Waterside and Londonderry Branches of the RBL, the Women’s Section of the RBL, RIR Association, UDR Association, Ulster Special Constabulary, REME Association and Army Cadets, Fountain Youth Club, Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, Ambulance Service, the PSNI and Army and military dignitaries, as well as members of Derry City and Strabane District Council.

Leading the Wreath Laying Ceremony was HM Lord Lieutenant for the City Borough of Londonderry, Dr Angela Garvey.

The return parade will follow the same route in reverse back to Iona Terrace.

A Service of Thanksgiving followed at St Columb’s Cathedral, where the Dean led in prayer and gave the Sermon, while HM Lord Lieutenant read the Lesson.

Yesterday, the Inishowen Friends of Messines, host WW1 Remembrance Service at Fort Dunree, Buncrana.
