Remembrance Sunday will be marked in Londonderry

Remembrance Sunday will be marked this weekend with a range of services and Acts of Reflection aimed at remembering and giving thanks for those who gave their lives for the peace and freedom.

The main event will be on Sunday, when the Waterside and Londonderry Branches of the Royal British Legion hold their annual parade and Act of Reflection at the War Memorial in The Diamond.

As has been the tradition in the city for many generations, the RBL request the Dean of Derry to conduct the Service of Remembrance at the War Memorial at 10.45am, which is followed by a Wreath laying ceremony.

Prior to this there will be a short service in the lower hall at the RBL Iona Terrace, at 9.10am.

The parade will form up at 9.15am at the RBL on Iona Terrace to march off march off 0930 from RBL Waterside. Taking part will be the Naval Association, RAF Association, The Waterside and Londonderry Branches of the RBL, the Women’s Section of the RBL, RIR Association, UDR Association, Ulster Special Constabulary, REME Association and Army Cadets.

They will be joined at The Diamond by members of Fountain Youth Club, Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, the Ambulance Service, the PSNI and Army and military dignitaries and serving members of Derry City and Strabane District Council.

Senior dignitaries will include HM Lord Lieutenant for the City Borough of Londonderry, Dr Angela Garvey.

The return parade will follow the same route in reverse back to Iona Terrace.

Following the Act of Remembrance at The Diamond, those who do not wish to take part in the return parade are welcome to visit St Columb’s Cathedral, where the Dean of Derry and HM Lord Lieutenant will host a traditional Service of Thanksgiving at 11.30am.

The service will be conducted by the Dean and the Lesson will be read by HM Lord Lieutenant.

The Cathedral will also be hosting services at 8am (Holy Communion) and at Choral Evensong at 4pm, at which the dead in all world conflict, past and present, will also be remembered.

A free minibus will operate between Iona Terrace and the city centre for elderly and infirm delegates.

This Saturday, November 7, the Inishowen Friends of Messines, will host their WW1 Remembrance Service at Fort Dunree, Buncrana, at 2.30pm.
