Removed clamp with angle grinder

A LURGAN man who took exception to his car being clamped broke the device off with an angle grinder.

He was 44-year-old Samuel Fraser, of Springwell Walk, Lurgan, and last Thursday at Craigavon court he was fined 250 for causing unlawful damage to a wheel clamp belonging to the Driver and Vehicle Agency on July 30 last year.

He was also ordered to pay 120 for the damage he caused.

A charge of unlawful assault was withdrawn.

The court heard the defendant’s car had been clamped because it did not have a tax disc. The clamp was subsequently removed.

A lawyer for Fraser said the defendant had moved house just days before this and had previously kept the car in a driveway.

He explained that one of the officers had been taking photographs and Fraser took exception to this and put his hand up.

He added that the defendant used an angle grinder to remove the clamp and then went to the police station to tell them what happened.
