Renewed approach to recycling as amenity site opens

BALLYMENA Borough Council is reopening its state-of-the-art recycling centre on Wednesday, May 29, following a major upgrade.

The household recycling centre at Waveney Road, Ballymena will now provide the residents of the Borough with a much more user-friendly and accessible recycling facility.

The upgrade was entirely funded by a Rethink Waste revenue grant of £680,000 from the Department of Environment, and, it is anticipated, that the significant investment associated with the upgrading of this site will make it easier and more convenient for residents to recycle, and, as a direct result improve recycling rates in the Borough.

Welcoming the opening of the recycling centre, the Mayor of Ballymena Borough Council, PJ McAvoy said: “This investment will make it easier and more attractive for our residents to recycle and help reduce waste going to landfill. Recycling doesn’t need to stop at our kerbsides. Often, there are many items which go to landfill which have potential for reuse, recycle or recovery.

“Our new centre in Ballymena has provision for a range of recycling such as large and small appliances, mobile phones, television screens, books, shoes and clothing. There are also large containers for recycling garden waste, wood, scrap metal and provision for other materials such as cardboard, used engine oil, batteries and fluorescent lighting tubes.”

The household recycling centre will be manned in order to ensure that residents using the facility will receive any necessary assistance and direction in relation to how the site can best meet their needs. For any queries on recycling call 028 25 648096.
