Renouned scientist visits Academy

BANBRIDGE Academy was proud to host a visit from Dr Steven Myers on Wednesday November 14.

The event was also attended by senior pupils from Friends School, Lisburn; Portadown College; Lurgan College and St Malachy’s College, Belfast.

Dr Myers is CERN Director for Accelerators and Technology and is distinguished for his direction, research and operation of the CERN Large Hadron Collider. This project has resulted in many significant advances in high energy particle physics, in particular, the discovery of the Higgs Boson particle in July 2012.

The pioneering discovery of this missing particle from the standard model of the atom that gives all other particles mass had eluded scientists for years and has resulted in multiple accolades, including (recently) the EPS Edison Volta Prize 2012.
