Members of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Environmental Services Committee agreed the decision at their meeting on Tuesday.

The sea defence rock armour protecting the north pier at Portrush harbour has reduced significantly as a result of constant aggressive wave action over many years.

Council’s Director of Environmental Services Aidan McPeak told members: “It is essential to carry out remedial replacement of rock armour as soon as possible to eliminate an inevitable risk to the north harbour.

“It is cost effective to reinstate the armour as soon as possible, to reduce harbour exposure and escalation of sea defence damage.

“It is estimated that approximately 1,500 tonnes of rock armour in the 6-10 tonne range will be required to provide an adequate reinstatement.

“Localised small sections of concrete to sloping pier wall (located behind the wall which formed demolished storage areas) will also be reinstated during this process.”

Mr McPeak said that weather is by far the greatest risk to the progress of the work which can only take place during periods of settled weather with limited or no swell on the sea.

“A suitable time to carry out this work is between April to May next year - just after Easter. The estimated works programme is six weeks,” said Mr McPeak.

Cllr Sam Cole proposed that the work be carried out as it was a “necessary project”.

Cllr William King seconded the proposal but said he hoped there would be a “20 year guarantee” built into the tender.

Members agreed to accept the recommendation that Council proceed to the next stage of the procurement process.
