Repairs to start soon on '˜eyesore' bridge near Magherafelt

TransportNI confirmed that it will carry out work to repair a bridge parapet before the end of financial year.

A safety fence at a nearby picnic site will be replaced this autumn.

SDLP MLA for Mid Ulster Patsy McGlone has welcomed confirmation that repairs will be carried out at Newbridge.

The Mid Ulster MLA had contacted Transport NI to raise concerns at the poor condition of the bridge and the nearby picnic site.

“I welcome confirmation from Transport NI that plans are being developed to replace the existing parapet on the bridge at Newbridge with a new galvanised parapet,” said Mr McGlone.

“The bridge is currently in a very poor condition and is an eyesore for the local community and for visitors to the area.

“The safety barrier at the nearby picnic site has also collapsed and Transport NI have agreed to replace it with a new barrier on steel posts.

“It is disappointing that facilities in rural areas are allowed to deteriorate into such an unacceptable state of disrepair before action is taken.

“I will be in contact with Transport NI to ensure that these repairs are carried out in a prompt and satisfactory manner.”

A DFI spokesperson said: “TransportNI can confirm that it will carry out work to repair the parapet at Newbridge and to replace the safety fence at the nearby picnic area/car park.

“The safety fence should be replaced this autumn. The work to replace the bridge parapet is more extensive and it is hoped this will be carried out before the end of the financial year.”
